What Is Mole Mapping And How Does It Protect Your Skin?

The best skincare treatments focus on the long-term health of your skin, and with that in mind, mole mapping is amongst the most important appointments someone can make in order to take care of their skin.

By taking a comprehensive, holistic, detailed analysis of your skin, our Nurse Prescriber Steena can provide a personalised baseline of your current skin health, analyse any skin lesions or moles which exist and provide clear recommendations for your long-term skin health.

Here is a brief guide to mole mapping and what it can do to protect your health in the long term.

Why Does Mole Mapping Matter?

Mole mapping is a detailed documentation of the moles, lesions and coloured spots on your body, which are used to create a skin map and detailed examination that can help you understand your current skin health, document any concerns and provide referrals to specialist dermatologists.

It matters because whilst most moles are harmless, they can sometimes be an early sign of skin cancer if they appear abnormal, emerge suddenly without warning, get bigger or change colour, or become painful and itchy.

What Does Mole Mapping Involve?

Most mole mapping appointments begin with a discussion with Nurse Prescriber Steena about your concerns, any recent moles or changes that have inspired your appointment, and a discussion of the overall process.

After this, a detailed set of images of up to three moles (or more) will be taken, with sufficient quality and detail to be used for assessment and later review. Moles can change in many different ways, so having a clear baseline is essential to have a clear picture of when a mole changes.

Any particular lesions of concern are also submitted to a specialist dermatologist for review, and you will be provided with a written report, a discussion of your results and a discussion of any next steps that you should take to protect your skin further.
