Should You Have Regular Botox Top-Ups?
When it comes to injectable skin treatments, the timing of follow-up treatments can be as important as the initial injection, and a skin clinic should have a consultation session with you to discuss the effects and ensure that you get the look you want.
This is especially true when it comes to Botox, the world’s most popular injectable aesthetic treatment, and it has led to some confusion regarding how often you should have treatments which could have long-lasting consequences.
This misconception is that following an in-clinic Botox session, you should go back for a “top-up” after two weeks, even though in reality top-up sessions should be every three to four months at the earliest.
Having too much Botox can be counterproductive and lead to permanent changes to the face, which is why it is used today in smaller and more targeted doses to gradually achieve a desired natural look. A full set of injections every two weeks is excessive to say the least.
However, where this misconception may come from is a mix-up between a top-up and a follow-up session.
Most of the time, botox and other similar injectable treatments are given in a single in-clinic session, with a follow-up booked after two weeks to give the treatment time to work and provide noticeable effects.
At the follow-up session, sometimes called an adjustment session or a review, the aesthetic practitioner will check up on how the treatment is working and if there are any concerns, as well as very occasionally providing touch-up treatments to provide minor corrections.
Usually, this session will take place within a month of treatment, sometimes it may not be necessary at all but it has to take place after the treatment has been given enough time to take effect.
From there, an aesthetic practitioner can check how much has been given and discuss potential doses for the next full session at least three months later.
