Does Everyone Need The Same Summer Skincare Routine?

Summer brings different challenges to the rest of the year for your skin, from high temperatures and humidity to the risk of sunburn. However, not everybody needs the same daily skincare routine to stay healthy in this season.

A consistent daily skincare routine is one of the best investments you can make for your skin’s long-term health. However, your skin’s needs are not the same all year round.

Changes in the seasons, temperature and humidity all have an impact on your skin, so it’s important to adapt your skincare accordingly.

For instance, you are likely to need moisturiser more in autumn and winter, when the wind and indoor heating dry out your skin and the skin produces less natural moisture than in summer.

However, a skin hydrating booster can be very beneficial in summer, especially if your skin is naturally drier than that of others.

How Can You Tailor Your Summer Skincare Regime According To Skin Type?

This has been highlighted, among other places, by a Cosmopolitan article that noted how those with different skin types needed to find varied ways of tailoring their skincare routines for summer.

It listed skin types as:

  • Oily skin
  • Dry Skin
  • Acne-prone skin
  • Sensitive skin

In the case of those with dry skin, the advice of a dermatologist was to use as much moisturiser as they would in winter, in order to combat the drying effects of the hot sun.

By contrast, those with oily skin were advised that the only moisturising agent they should use was sunscreen. Instead, much of the focus should be on cleansing to remove excess moisture, sweat and sebum.

Indeed, an article by Vogue focusing on the needs of those with oily skin placed a similar emphasis on cleansing, but not excess drying.

One of the dermatologists it consulted, Dr Alexis Granite, noted that often the focus is on applying drying formulas, but this was something she advised against, as too much drying will only trigger the skin to compensate by producing more oil.

Having a daily skincare routine is a wise approach for everyone. But in the summer, it should definitely be tailored to your skin type.
